I recently want to get involved in import and export trade related businesses, and I am hesitating between acting as an import agent and consignment sales. I would like to ask everyone, which one is easier to do, acting as an import agent or consignment sales? I am not very familiar with the processes of these two businesses, so I would like to understand which one is relatively easier to start and more suitable for beginners from the aspects of operational difficulty, capital investment, and risk control.

Acting as an import agent and consignment sales each have their characteristics. In terms of operational difficulty, acting as an import agent involves complex processes such as communicating with foreign suppliers and customs declaration and clearance, requiring high knowledge of international trade; consignment sales are mainly responsible for sales, with a relatively simple process. If you are familiar with sales channels, consignment sales can be quickly grasped.

In terms of capital investment, acting as an import agent requires upfront payment for goods, resulting in high capital pressure; consignment sales generally do not require large amounts of capital, with low capital turnover pressure, making consignment sales more advantageous.

In terms of risk control, acting as an import agent faces risks such as cargo quality and exchange rate fluctuations; consignment sales risks are mostly concentrated in slow-moving products. As long as good products are selected, the risks are relatively controllable. Overall, if you are a beginner, consignment sales may be easier to do, and you can consider expanding your business line with import agency after becoming familiar with the business.

I think acting as an import agent is easier. Once a stable relationship is established with foreign suppliers, the business is relatively stable. Although the capital investment is large, the profit margin may also be large.

From a capital perspective, consignment sales have much less pressure. You don't need to pay a large amount of money to buy goods yourself. It's more stable for beginners to do consignment sales.
