I've been studying international trade knowledge recently and am quite interested in re-export trade. I'm wondering if this form of trade is included in the balance of payments? Because re-export trade involves goods circulating between different countries without domestic production or processing, the situation seems a bit special, so I'm not sure how it's accounted for in balance of payments statistics. Can any professionals help answer this question?

Re-export trade is included in the balance of payments. The balance of payments is a systematic record of all economic transactions of a country with other countries over a certain period. In re-export trade, although the country is not involved in the production of goods, it acts as a transit point for trade, involving the buying and selling of goods, which leads to cross-border capital flows.

For example, if Zhongmaoda purchases goods from Country A and then resells them to Country B, there will be capital inflows and outflows to the country during this process. In the balance of payments, this will be reflected in the goods trade item under the current account. During imports, it will be recorded as a debit in goods trade; during export resales, it will be recorded as a credit in goods trade. The recording of such capital flows helps to comprehensively reflect the country's position and economic activity in international economic exchanges, so re-export trade is clearly included in balance of payments statistics.
